Job Description

Aim of the Post:

The Volunteer Coordinator will play a key role in the development and implementation of the befriending volunteering project. This 10-month project is funded by Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA). to set up a befriending service to reduce isolation and loneliness among senior or other community members with language barriers in Wales, initially focusing in four counties Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Cardiff and Pembrokeshire. It is also to provide a great opportunity for volunteers to improve their interpersonal skills and well-being though befriending with others and attending tailor-made training.

The post holder will be responsible for supervising befriending activities and maintain communication with the volunteers.

The post holder will need to have strong multilingual skills in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.

This post is subject to a satisfactory criminal records disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Main task and responsibilities:

  • To implement the funded project as planned.
  • To build up a befriending volunteer team and establish a befriending network with impact
  • To develop training plan for befriending project and deliver to the volunteers
  • Introduce Welsh culture (+/- Welsh language) to befrienders and befriendees
  • To accurately maintain clear and precise records for all service users, ensuring confidentiality and following safeguarding procedure
  • To evaluate service users’ feedback.
  • To comply with all CIWA’s policies and procedures.
  • To undertake any other duties assigned by the Project Manager.

Person Specification

Essential:

Education / Qualifications

2 A levels or equivalent qualifications of above or three years related experience (preferably volunteering management related).

Experience

  1. Experience of supporting a membership-based network, engaging organisations and individuals to work collaboratively.
  2. Experience of delivering engaging and creative communications strategies and approaches.
  3. Experience of working with vulnerable adults in the context of Chinese culture.
  4. Experience of working in a culturally sensitive setting.
  5. Experience of volunteering.

Skills and abilities

  1. Excellent interpersonal, presentation (oral and written) skills and attention to details.
  2. Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively are necessary.
  3. Excellent clear and concise written and spoken language skills in Mandarin, Cantonese and English.
  4. Proven ability to multi-task, be flexible and meet deadlines.
  5. Commitment to team working.
  6. Ability to work on own initiative and be proactive.
  7. Ability to use standard procedures and common sense to solve problems
  8. Able to handle, resolve and escalate enquiries passing on relevant information promptly
  9. Proficient computer literate skills with the aptitude to learn how to use required software.

Desirable:

  1. Experience of promoting information through different digital platforms (website and social media).
  2. Comfortable with working from home with various IT tools, including video conference platforms like Zoom or MS Teams.
  3. Knowledge of diverse local services within targeted areas.
  4. Knowledge of safeguarding and General Data Protection Regulation.
  5. Ability to speak other popular Chinese dialect such as Hakka dialect.
  6. Full UK driving licence with own car.
