Job Description

The Multilingual autism specialist will play a key role in the development and implementation of the ‘Support Me Project’. This 9-month project is funded by Awards For All Big lottery Fund.

It aims to support the ethnic Chinese children with autism and learning disabilities, through providing multilingual advocacy services to have fair access to local services in South Wales.

Main task and responsibilities

Implement the funded project on time and within budget
Support families whether with children that have been diagnosed or are on the diagnosis pathway and to advocate for these families to various sectors to support them have the right education and health care and social support.
Recruit volunteers to enable them to support and assist in implementing the project.
Deliver autism training to volunteers and up-skill them with correct use of the terms related to the condition
Promote understanding of the condition by holding two talks within the Chinese community to reduce cultural stigma
Build network with health professionals and autism related service providers.

Person Specification

Essential

Education / Qualifications

Degree in relevant subject area (preferably translation, communication or autism related) or five years related experience.

Experience

Experience of supporting a membership-based network, engaging organisations and individuals to work collaboratively.
Experience of delivering engaging and creative communications strategies and approaches.
Experience of working with children with special needs.
Experience of project management.
Experience of working in a culturally sensitive setting.
Experience of document translation.
Experience of public service interpretation.
Experience of supporting and motivating volunteers.

Skills and abilities

Excellent interpersonal, presentation (oral and written) skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines are necessary.
Excellent clear and concise written and spoken language skills (Mandarin, Cantonese and English).
Proven ability to multi-task, be flexible and meet deadlines.
Problem solving skills, with a focus on finding effective solutions.
Commitment to team working.
Good IT skills including all Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to work on own initiative and be proactive.
Willingness and capacity to travel.
