Background information
Ceilian Fan, a 55-year-old entrepreneur, operates a BNB (Bed and Breakfast) in London alongside her family, including her husband, son, and daughter-in-law. Her journey to the UK began in Manchester and eventually led her to North Wales, where she now feels deeply connected.
Originally from China, Ceilian first came to the UK after marrying her husband, arriving on a honeymoon that significantly impacted her life. The couple fell in love with the scenic beauty of the Welsh coastline. Inspired by the vast ocean views and the charm of the local architecture, Ceilian envisioned owning a BNB there as a future retirement plan. This dream, which she casually voiced during their trip, became a reality years later.
Ceilian’s initial experience in the UK presented significant challenges. Arriving with limited English proficiency—knowing only the English alphabet—she faced difficulties navigating daily life and social integration. Unable to work initially due to visa restrictions, she relied on her husband’s support. Determined to improve, Ceilian committed to learning English, hiring a tutor, practicing vocabulary, and studying diligently to build her language skills.
Adapting to the UK climate was another notable aspect of her journey. Ceilian found the weather in Manchester dreary and cold, in stark contrast to North Wales, where she could enjoy wearing her favorite skirts during the warmer summers.
Ceilian’s story is one of resilience and adaptability. From a hesitant newcomer struggling with communication to a thriving business owner in a place she loves, her journey reflects her determination to overcome challenges and realize her dreams. Her family’s collective effort in running the BNB symbolises their unity and shared vision, making her story both personal and inspiring.
