Background information

Yen Yen Lai is a 55-year-old woman originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she spent her childhood and formative years. She worked at a Rolex repair company in Kuala Lumpur, where she met her first husband, Stuart. In 1997, the couple immigrated to Glasgow, Scotland, where she lived for eleven years. Following a divorce, Yen Yen continued to live independently in Glasgow until she met her current partner, with whom she later relocated to Swansea, Wales.

In 2008, when Yen Yen moved to Swansea, she was one month pregnant. She quickly found employment as a clerk at the local government’s bankruptcy management department, marking her first job in the area. Shortly thereafter, she welcomed the birth of her long-awaited daughter, whom she celebrated with her family through traditional gatherings and special occasions.

Yen Yen continued working after her daughter’s birth, eventually transitioning to a job at Swansea University’s library. Throughout her time in Wales, Yen Yen has actively engaged with the local Chinese community, participating in cultural activities and fostering connections within the community. Her story reflects resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to family and heritage.
