Background information

Temmy Woolston, born Temmy Kwok in Cardiff in 1976, shares a rich and resilient family history. Her mother, Angela Jim, immigrated to Wales as a teenager in the early 1970s, following her father, who opened Cardiff’s first Chinese restaurant, the Rice Bowl. Angela faced overt racism and workplace discrimination but responded with remarkable strength and dignity, standing up for herself and others. Alongside Temmy’s father, who joined her from Hong Kong in the 1960s, Angela worked in her father’s restaurant before opening their own takeaway in 1974. Angela also became a pillar of the Chinese community, providing translations, supporting women through a Chinese Women’s Association she founded, and fostering cultural exchange between Chinese and Welsh communities. Her contributions earned her a Purple Plaque, a testament to her legacy. Temmy, inspired by her mother’s example, navigates her dual identity as both Welsh and Chinese, striving to pass down cultural traditions to her children and honor her family’s heritage.
