Background information
Peter Wong is a Labour Councillor for Roath, Cardiff, and a prominent voice representing the Chinese community in Wales. Born in Mongkok, Hong Kong, Pete moved to the UK as a child with his family, who were economic migrants. His story of growing up in poverty, living above a Chinese takeaway, and witnessing the struggles of immigrants shaped his passion for politics and public service. At 15, Pete joined the Labour Party, despite initial concerns from his family. Today, he is the only Chinese councillor among Wales’ 22 local authorities, advocating for greater representation and recognition of the contributions of Chinese and East Asian communities in Welsh history. In this interview, Pete shares his personal journey, the challenges faced by his family as immigrants, and his deep commitment to social justice. He also highlights the often-overlooked history of Chinese communities in Wales, calling for more engagement and acknowledgment of their experiences.
